There are stories of adventure in every culture, but none more remarkable than the true story of Hijra for kids — the night Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his closest companion Abu Bakr slipped out of Makkah under the cover of darkness, while enemies circled his home, and journeyed toward a new beginning in Madinah. It is a story of real danger, extraordinary courage, unshakeable trust in Allah, and a friendship so deep it changed the world. Sit close. This one is worth telling well.

The Night Everything Changed

For thirteen years, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had preached the message of Islam in Makkah. And for thirteen years, the powerful leaders of the Quraysh had fought him — mocking him, hurting his companions, and plotting against him. But now, their patience had run out. They hatched their final plan: men from every tribe would attack Muhammad ﷺ simultaneously so that no single tribe could be blamed. They would strike at night, while he slept.

But Allah knew. He revealed to the Prophet ﷺ that night: leave now.

The Prophet ﷺ asked his young cousin Ali ibn Abi Talib to sleep in his bed, wrapped in his green cloak, to make it appear he was still there. Then he stepped out of his home — and the armed men who had gathered outside, watching the house, somehow did not see him. The Prophet ﷺ recited verses from Surah Ya-Sin as he walked through them, and not one of them noticed. Some things, only Allah can explain.

The Cave of Thawr

The Prophet ﷺ and his dearest friend Abu Bakr as-Siddiq met in the dark and set off — not north toward Madinah, but south, in the opposite direction. A clever move. They climbed to a cave called Thawr, high in the rocky hills, and hid there for three days while the Quraysh searched frantically.

On the second day, the search party came so close that Abu Bakr could see their feet from the mouth of the cave. His heart hammered with fear. He whispered to the Prophet ﷺ: “O Messenger of Allah — if they just look down, they’ll see us.” The Prophet ﷺ placed his hand on Abu Bakr’s shoulder and said with total calm: “Do not grieve. Allah is with us.”

Allah had sent a spider to spin its web across the cave entrance. He had sent a dove to nest at the mouth. Any tracker who saw those undisturbed signs would assume no one had entered recently. And they turned away. The Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr were safe.

Three days. No army. No weapons. Just two men, a spider, a dove, and Allah’s protection.

The Journey North

When the coast was clear, they descended the mountain with a trusted guide named Abdullah ibn Urayqit, who led them along a secret coastal route far from the main roads. The desert sun beat down. The journey was long and difficult. But the Prophet ﷺ moved with quiet certainty — he knew where he was going, and he knew who was guiding him.

Word had spread to Madinah. The Muslims there — who had accepted Islam and were waiting eagerly — came out every morning to the edge of the city, watching the horizon. Day after day they waited, then returned home when the sun grew too hot. And then one blazing afternoon, a man climbed a rooftop to get a better view and spotted two distant figures approaching through the heat haze. “He’s here!” he shouted. “The Prophet is here!”

The streets of Madinah filled with joy. Children ran. Women sang from rooftops. The sound of Tala’a al-Badru ‘Alayna — “The full moon has risen upon us” — rang out through the city. The Prophet ﷺ arrived not as a refugee defeated, but as a leader chosen by Allah, welcomed by an entire city that had been waiting for him.
